On Friday, October 31, 2025, the Roman Catholic Church for the Diocese of Alexandria filed a petition to reorganize its financial affairs under Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code. The diocese has acknowledged that this filing was, in part, resulted from the decades of sexual abuse of juveniles committed by members of the clergy. This means that individuals who may have a claim against the Diocese of Alexandria, including those individuals who have a claim arising out of childhood sexual abuse, may no longer seek to litigate their claims against the Diocese in state court and instead must seek redress through the bankruptcy process.

If you have been abused by a member of the clergy within the Diocese of Alexandria, you may wish to file a Proof of Claim in the bankruptcy prior to the Bar Date. It does not matter how long ago that abuse took place, as the Louisiana legislature amended the prescriptive period, also known as the statute of limitations, in 2021 to eliminate a time-bar for claims of childhood sexual abuse and it also enacted a lookback window for victims who were previously unable to come forward with their claims. The Court has not yet issued a deadline by which survivors must file claims, and we are closely monitoring the docket for this and other important deadlines. We represent survivors of sexual abuse across the state and have navigated these delicate cases both in state court and through bankruptcy proceedings. If you have been abused by a member of the Diocese of Alexandria and wish to file a Proof of Claim, please contact us and we can help you maximize your recovery in this bankruptcy proceeding.
